Blith is the handmaiden in charge
of “the weather in the Apple Valley”, as she explained it to me – the moods of
the brain. Her name means “happy, blithe” and her job is to get people’s mental
states into equanimity. She deals with mood disorders of all kinds –
depression, mania, anxiety, rage problems, grief, anything that throws the
weather in the head into such disarray that functioning is impaired. As sleep
deprivation makes all mood disorders worse, she is also in charge of insomnia
and getting a good sleep. She can be propitiated for help in depression and
other mood disorders, although she expects one to do the things she suggests
rather than simply sit around and mope.
Blith’s color is lavender and the
world-energy she works with is, strangely enough, that of Svartalfheim, with
its underground sister-realm Nidavellir. Svartalfheim/Nidavellir is a cold, dry
place without much light – whether above-ground in the dark elves’ lair or
underground in the cities of the Duergar. It is a hard place to be happy, but
part of its spiritual lesson is the ability to find ways to be happy under less
than optimal circumstances, and this is Blith’s specialty. Herbs to put into a
magic charm pouch for her would include antidepressants such as St. John’s
Wort, Motherwort, Sage, or Lemon Balm. Dandelion can also be included for its
affinity for bipolar disorder. Sedatives such as Valerian or Betony are
appropriate as well. Her favorite stone is amethyst and it can be included.
If you or someone else needs healing from depression or other mood disorders, light a candle for Blith and then go to the Offerings page and make an offering.
Prayer for Blith by Nornoriel
Blithe Spirit,
you smile and laugh,
restoring our smiles and laughter,
helping us to see the humor in each day,
and the good things each of us are given.
Help us to be grateful for the good,
and not take the bad so seriously.
Hail Blith,
the Happy Healer.
