Many legends
have been built around Mother Holda and her penchant for spinning. She was said
to punish lazy women who neglected their daily spinning and sewing, and to
helpfully do the work of women who had collapsed exhausted by their spindles
and wheels and looms and sewing baskets, taking up their work while they slept.
(In general, she is said to reward the diligent and punish the slothful.) The
ancient Norse women used spindles made of soapstone, which is easily carved and
sanded into such shapes.
Spindles can be carved with runes depending on what sort of energy you wish to create while spinning, and that same energy will go into the thread and the cloth that is woven from it. A spinning wheel can be carved with the rune of your choice, but a good choice might be a Sowelu rune for the sun-wheel. While you spin, say (or even better, sing) this prayer:
Mother Holda, hands of power,
Fingers quick as flax-blue flower,
Make my thread spin fine and strong,
Ever soft and ever long,
With all the power borne in your song.
