Prayer to Surt for Courage
by Raven Kaldera
Hail, Grandfather of Fire,
Lord of the smoking black beaches,
Lord of the burning wastes,
Lord of the clouds that burn the eyes,
Lord of the dancing giants
Whom I see ripping through trees
When the forest burns in my world.
The trees told me - do you know -
That they dream of death in flames,
That this is their highest moment,
Their Valhalla. To become ashes,
Sweetening the field after that last
Beautiful dance. Surt, Lord of Flame,
Give me courage to face that dance.
Let me open my arms to the force
That burns away all that is dead
And dying in my life, and if also
Some living matter must be sacrificed,
Let me go rejoicing to the pain,
And see the ashes of my former existence
As the gift I give to the Earth
And all the forces of regeneration.
Grandfather of Fire, who loves my mother
As his own grandchild, smile upon me
And guide my footsteps through
What must be.
