To bless skis, that they might be swift and steady, and that one should never tumble nor be caught in an avalanche, break an evergreen branch and bind it to the skis with white yarn like snow. Hold it up to the Sun on a cold, clear day and call out:
Bow-God great and bright
As sun on shining snow,
Find my feet a way to follow
Safe on shields of wood wrought well.
Snow-Sender, keep me clear of falls,
Bone-Skater, be my body’s guard
Ullr, Yew-God, Yuletide’s winds of winter
Threaten me and mine with harm;
Help me return with game in hand
To give you glory, and to stay well warm.
Then untie the evergreen and fasten it with the yarn to a nail above your door, until it dries and falls away. Mark your skis with the rune of the Elk, Algiz, for strength and surety, and the rune Laguz for running like water through the frozen ice. Wear them well in Ullr’s name.
