Snake Border
The undulation in the waves,
The border where the magic starts,
The beating of a lengthened heart,
The searching of a thousand days.
The living wall of long protection,
The mind unknowable and deep
Who spins and shifts in floating sleep,
A being in singular perfection.
The turning stars, the twinkling heights,
Reflected in the giant eye,
The spiral of a sudden sky,
Between the tides, the endless lights,
These are your beacons of the world
And all else is but open sea,
Through which you pass like destiny
A ribbon in the green, unfurled.
The serpent suckled by the wolf,
The fiery trickster's startled joy,
The little death-child's living toy,
The consciousness that spans the gulf
Of word and not-word, land and water,
Holy passion's son and daughter.
