Frey and Freya Rite for High Summer
by Gudrun of Mimirsbrunnr
This ritual can be adapted for a solitary worshiper, a couple, or a group. When I perform this ritual, I use a horn and a necklace of large chunks of amber, and a bottle of mead. Stand outside in full sunlight and place the items on a cloth of green and gold. Pour the mead into the horn and speak the following invocation:
Vanaguð, ágetasti af asum, folkum stýrir,
We hail you, mighty Frey and wise,
The green that we greedily devour,
The gift to our craving bellies.
You are the gift of high summer,
Green as the grass we lie in,
Golden as the light on the leaves.
Hold up the string of amber so that you can see the sunlight through it, and speak the following invocation:
Vanadis, fegjafa, fagr-ferðugr,
We hail you, fair Freyja and wise,
The blossom that yields to fruit,
The fruit that bursts in our mouths.
You are the gift of high summer,
Green as the grass we lie in,
Golden as the light on the leaves.
Sprinkle a bit of the mead in all directions, and speak this invocation:
Hail to the Vaettir of the land
That cradles my footsteps and traces my path.
I come to ask for blessings, for wealth
Of growth, of light, of all things come to fruition.
Pour out the mead onto the grass, and speak the following invocation:
Bless this land, O Sacred Twins,
Brother, sister, children of Earth,
Givers of fertility of tree and flower,
Of animal and human, of all life.
As I offer you the honey’s kiss
I see you, Golden God and Goddess,
Double blessing sprung from one womb
One fair day in great Vana-land,
Come together as one light, one sun
Brought down to earth and earthly power!
Gift this land with blessed growth,
May blossoms rush to luscious fruit,
May leaves and stems grow lush and tall,
May seeds hang ripe in clusters heavy,
May roots swell beneath the turned earth.
May no disease or blight find us
In our safe harbor of earthen goodness.
Come together, Sacred Twins,
Tvifaldleikr, Gullbjartr,
Entwine your bodies and your hearts
With all the holy land around.
As these words are spoken, twine the string of amber about the horn, which is now empty and point-upward. When it is tightly twined, set the horn down where you have poured out the mead, bow to the horn and amber, close your eyes in respect, and back away. Let the energy of the Sacred Twins work through what you have left in the grass. At the end of the day, when the rays of the sun are dying away, come and retrieve the horn and amber and separate them, and silently thank Brother and Sister together.
